Lucky Chinatown continues to strengthen its role as a cultural destination in Binondo as it hosts the SAFATOS Pilipinas Exhibition, a showcase of award-winning Philippine footwear designs that earned international recognition at the International Footwear Design Competition 2026 held in Guangzhou, China.
Co-presented by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute and Lucky Chinatown, the exhibition opened on June 12 in celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day and will run until June 30, 2026 at the Lucky Chinatown Atrium.
Set in the heart of the country’s historic Filipino-Chinese district, the exhibit brings Philippine creativity into a space long known for cultural exchange, heritage, and community life. Through SAFATOS Pilipinas, Lucky Chinatown presents another expression of its identity as a destination where local traditions, contemporary design, and cultural pride come together alongside the rich Chinese heritage of Binondo.
The exhibition features sustainable, locally made, and proudly Philippine-designed footwear created by local designers and shoe artisans empowered by textile and footwear innovations. It also highlights the achievements of Team Philippines at the International Footwear Design Competition (IFDC), an annual global competition organized by the Confederation of International Footwear Alliance, which recognizes excellence in footwear design, innovation, and creativity.
Among the featured works is “Pakan” by designer Ricmar Agas, manufactured by Konzept Shoes, which made history as the Overall Grand Champion across all categories and Grand Prize Gold Award recipient at IFDC 2026. A first for the Philippines, the design draws inspiration from Philippine handloom weaving traditions and incorporates fabrics from the Ilocos Region, along with weaving elements such as shuttles, yarns, and spindles.
Featuring Inabel fabric, Agas’ “Pakan” is named after the Ilocano term for weft threads in traditional weaving.
Other designs featured in the exhibit include “Tangled” by Bon Marter, “Sayaw ng Butanding at ng Mayon” by Lester Dellosa, “Bakunawa Ngan Mga Kadayaw” by Karen Mae La’O, “Oryol” by Hazel Roldan, “Mutya ng Panay” by Pamela Foronda, “Batang 90’s” by Florsheila Santos-Budoso, “Balangay” by Renegade Limpin, “Sirena” by Hanna Camille De Villa, and “Laut Laya” by Ely Edullan.
The National Footwear Design Competition, co-organized by the Filipino Footwear Alliance Association in partnership with DOST-PTRI and the Department of Trade and Industry, served as the local platform for the featured works before their participation on the international stage.
Through SAFATOS Pilipinas, Lucky Chinatown brings textile science innovations closer to the public while celebrating Philippine creativity on the global stage. Guests are invited to discover the stories behind the featured designs and support the local talents shaping the future of Philippine footwear.
