Zarzuela > Sarswela, A Musical Bridge Between Spain and the Philippines

On August 26, Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy of Spain, the University of Santo Tomas (UST), and Teatro de la Zarzuela will present Zarzuela-Sarswela, a concert featuring a selection of pieces from classic Spanish zarzuelas alongside works from Philippine sarswelas. The recital, the culmination of the zarzuela workshop led by Spanish pianist Ramón Grau, will take place at the Education Auditorium (4F Albertus Magnus Building), UST, at 5pm. Admission is free, and early registration is encouraged at https://forms.office.com/e/gqQYWUHzSb.

This concert marks the grand finale of Zarzuela Viva, a month-long celebration of the shared cultural heritage between Spain and the Philippines, featuring weekly zarzuela screenings, an immersive workshop, and this closing recital.

The zarzuela, one of the most treasured art forms in the Spanish-speaking world, was also among the most popular cultural expressions in the Philippines for decades. As Alexandra Chua, Dean of the UST Conservatory of Music, observes: “In the Philippine context, the sarswela is not merely a borrowed tradition, but a powerful symbol of Filipino transcultural identity and creativity. Embedded within it are distinctly Filipino stories and narratives that reflect local experiences, struggles, and aspirations. Through the reimagining of inherited forms, the sarswela becomes a dynamic expression of Filipino agency and cultural voice.”

Norjan Abass Opens Maria: A Kaleidoscope at Gateway Gallery

The exhibit “Maria: A Kaleidoscope” is an exploration in presenting the traditional image of the Filipina in Filipiniana attire by artist Norjan Ismail Abbas. Moving further along his “Talukbong at Tapis” 2024 exhibit, Maria is a focused exploration into the “Alternative Filipiniana.”

For this exhibit, “kaleidoscope” refers to the different images/roles of the Filipina at a certain historical period, probably at the turn of the 20th century or post-American period, as seen in these images. In Maria, one can glean the iconic women of Fernando Amorsolo’s paintings: images of women bathing in rivers, women selling in the town plaza, and women going to church.

Abass, in this second iteration, utilizes the abstract, the modernist, and Fauvist-inspired styles (though most of the pieces are in muted colors) in the representation of the Filipina with a strong emphasis on her garb. It is a re-imagination of the nostalgic colonial Filipina using a contemporary lens.

On the Right Track: Rail Connectivity Powers Aseana City’s Rise

The newly opened Redemptorist Aseana Station.

As EDSA braces for rehabilitation and commuters continue to endure the daily grind of traffic congestion, one solution is quietly but powerfully reshaping how Metro Manila moves: rail connectivity.

According to the latest  TomTom Traffic Index, Metro Manila’s congestion level averages 41%, with hotspots like Pasig, Makati, and Quezon City ballooning to over 120% during rush hour. For the average commuter, that means more than four days and seven hours lost each year in traffic; time that could have been spent with loved ones, on hobbies, or simply resting.

For D.M. Wenceslao and Associates, Inc. (PSE: DMW), developer of Aseana City, this urban reality was never just a statistic but  was a challenge worth planning for.

“At DMWAI, we believe cities should empower people to live better, not wear them down.” said Buds Wenceslao, Chief Executive Officer, DMWAI. “We saw the need early on to build not just a business district but a truly connected community. That’s why we anchored Aseana City on  transit-oriented developments ensuring direct access to the rail system from the beginning.”
